Abaqus is a multipurpose software with a very excellent capability for structural analysis, finite element modeling and analysis, and most importantly non-linear analysis. It's also the best value-for-money program considering its capabilities. Another best part about Abaqus is , it has an inbuilt python program shell. That is , if you start recording it will automatically write the equivalent python script for your model. So if you want to modified or automate your work flow, its super easy. The user interface is a bit boring. Also the flexibility of the output files to read in other finite element programs is poor. Another issue I found is the lack of study materials. ie, if you get stuck while modeling / analyzing, it's difficult to pull out the exact reason and rectify the issue by a google search as we do for other software. The best thing about Abaqus, from the perspective of someone like me, is that all the modules that make up the simulation are listed for you on the left side of the screen. The most annoying part about Abaqus is its limited meshing capabilities. Changing the mesh is very long and tedious, and sometimes your computer won't have enough processing power for more advanced tasks. Ansys, for example, has an entire module dedicated to customizing the mess, and it is very detailed and much easier to use/understand, at least for me. I also dislike how limited the program is in generating a 3D object. I usually designed the object in a program like SOLIDWORKS and then imported it to Abaqus.
